Safe handling

Safe handling starts with the product labelling, packaging and instructions for use. Here we summarise checks before use, storage and handling of used needles and other sharp or cutting waste.

From package to disposal

Följ alltid produktens märkning, bruksanvisning och lokala regler för avfallshantering.

Before opening

  • Check the product name, dimensions and connection against the product you intend to use.
  • Do not use a sterile product if the sterile barrier is open or damaged.
  • Check the labelling, expiry date and manufacturer's instructions.

Storage

  • Follow the product labelling and the manufacturer's storage instructions.
  • Protect the packaging from damage and keep products out of reach of children.
  • Products labelled for single use must not be reused.

After use

  • Place used needles and other sharp or cutting waste in a container intended for such waste.
  • Do not fill the container above the indicated fill line and follow the product instructions.
  • An empty syringe without a needle should be handled according to your municipality's local guidance. Also follow the municipality's instructions for disposal of the sharps container.

Common questions about handling

Where should I take a full sharps container?

Follow your municipality's local instructions for handing in sharps containers and other sharp or cutting waste. Check what applies where you live before the container is full.

Can I throw used needles in household waste?

Used needles and other sharp or cutting waste should be handled in a container intended for such waste and disposed of according to local guidance.

Can a syringe be reused?

A product labelled for single use must not be reused. Always follow the product labelling and instructions for use.

What are the age requirements?

Syringes and needles may be sold to persons aged 20 or over. A person under 20 may purchase such products only if it can be demonstrated that they are needed for the buyer's own medical use or that of a family member. The rules are set out in Swedish Act (2012:595).

Do I need to disinfect the skin before every injection?

Follow the instructions for the treatment and product you use. If you are unsure, follow advice from healthcare professionals or the product's instructions for use.

Can I share a syringe or needle with a family member?

Never share used syringes, needles or pen needles between people. Always follow the product labelling and instructions.

What should I do if a product breaks or does not work as intended?

Stop using the product if continued use could involve a risk. Keep the product and packaging with the LOT/batch and REF/item number visible and contact Tilden.

I have been stuck by a used needle. What should I do?

If there is a risk of exposure to blood, contact healthcare services for assessment without delay. In a workplace, the organisation's procedure for needlestick and sharps injuries should also be followed.
