U-100 insulin syringes: guide to volume and labelling

U-100 indicates the insulin concentration: 100 units per millilitre. A U-100 insulin syringe is graduated for this concentration. The marking is therefore not merely a name for the syringe but an important compatibility specification that must match the insulin concentration and prescription.

Volume and U-100 are two different specifications

On an insulin syringe you may see both U-100 and a volume in millilitres. U-100 describes the concentration for which the syringe graduation is intended, while 0.3 ml, 0.5 ml or 1 ml describes the syringe's volume capacity. The volume alone does not indicate what dose a person should take.

Tilden's current U-100 range

Tilden sells embecta Micro-Fine U-100 insulin syringes with fixed needles in several sizes:

The sizes are also available in 100-packs. See the full U-100 insulin syringes category.

Always check the labelling

Insulin concentration, syringe graduation, needle dimensions and prescription must be handled correctly. Do not use this guide to convert doses between different concentrations or to select a dose. Official medicine information for U-100 insulin states that U-100 means 100 units/ml and warns that using the wrong syringe type can lead to dosing errors.

Always follow the insulin prescription, product labelling and instructions for use. If you are unsure about insulin, dose or syringe type, contact a healthcare professional or pharmacy.

For an overview of syringe volume, needle gauge (G), needle length and product designations, read Tilden's needle and syringe guide.
