How to read gauge, needle length and volume

· SteriPoint

Short answer: gauge (G) describes the needle gauge, millimetres describe the needle length and millilitres describe the syringe volume. These measurements describe different things and should be read together.

Gauge, for example 30G

Gauge is stated with the letter G and describes the needle gauge. A higher gauge number normally corresponds to a thinner needle. Read more in the guide What do 23G, 27G and 30G mean?

Length in millimetres

Needle length is usually stated in millimetres, for example 8 mm or 19 mm. Length is a separate specification and does not mean the same thing as gauge.

Volume in millilitres

Syringe volume is stated in millilitres, for example 0.3 ml, 0.5 ml, 1 ml, 3 ml or 5 ml. For U-100 insulin syringes, always check the product labelling and prescription before use. Read more in the guide to U-100 insulin syringes.

Check the full specification

Two products may have the same volume but different gauge or length. Always check the product name, key specifications, packaging and the manufacturer's instructions. Tilden can help explain product data but does not provide individual medical advice.
